Blair Kurtz  BVSc
Practice Owner

Blair has been the owner of Quakers Hill Veterinary Hospital for approximately 20 years. A professional rugby league career during his university studies and a childhood helping to raise greyhounds has stimulated his keen interest and expertise in all aspects of sports medicine. He excels in greyhound medicine, orthopaedic surgery, chiropractic services and laser acupuncture. In his moments of spare time, he enjoys surfing, martial arts, running and competing in triathalons.

Michael Sames  BVSc CertVOphthal MACVS (Feline Medicine)
Practice Owner

Michael graduated from the University of Sydney in 1992 and immediately entered mixed practice in Port Macquarie. The area presented a variety of opportunities including position of superintendant at the Koala Hospital, duty veterinarian at the local thoroughbred race clubs, and working with a range of animals including camels, ostriches and a giant sea turtle.

He left for the UK in 1996 spending a majority of the time managing a busy branch of a large veterinary group in east London. Michael completed the requirements and examinations for the Certificate in Veterinary Ophthalmology from the Royal Veterinary College in 1998. 

Michael returned to Sydney in 2003 to work at Eyevet Associates completing a Membership in Feline Medicine from the Australian College of Veterinary Science. He joined Quakers Hill Veterinary Hospital in 2005 and became a partner in April 2008.

Michael enjoys spending his free time with his two young sons and taking them caravanning to various parts of Australia. He is a sports tragic and enjoys cycling. His furry family includes a Border Terrier, Birman, 3 Cockatiels, Rabbit, Guinea Pig and a variety of fish.

Matt Kwong  BVSc

Amanda Miller  BVSc (Hons)
Veterinarian

Amanda began working at QHVH in 2007 as a part-time nurse while completing her veterinary studies at the University of Sydney. Since graduating from veterinary science in 2009 she has been one of our full-time veterinarians.

After completing an Honours research project, Amanda has developed a special interest in the diagnosis and treatment of Cushing’s disease in dogs. She enjoys all aspects of veterinary practice, particularly emergency and critical care, anaesthesia, soft tissue surgery, abdominal ultrasound and challenging medical cases.

Amanda enjoys spending time with her boyfriend, family and her 14-year-old Maltese terrier Toby. She enjoys swimming and running and is also a keen hockey player. 

Alpha Au  BVSc (Hons)

Alpha joined QHVH early 2011. She previously worked one year at Belmont Veterinary Practice plus as a greyhound racetrack vet at The Gardens, Newcastle. Alpha's veterinary interests include greyhounds, surgery and small animal reproduction. She has a deep passion for animal welfare and ethics. Her hobbies include eating, cooking, dancing, cycling, muay thai and reading. She currently owns a three-year old Stumpy Tailed Cattle Dog  called Arkie.

Jill Johnston  
Veterinary Practice Manager

Jill is our Practice Manager and has been a part of QHVH for 17 years. She previously worked at the Baulkham Hills Emergency Afterhours Centre. Her CV includes Certificates in Engineering, Drafting, Computer Drafting and Cake Decorating. Jill's passion for animals is underlined  by her 6 dogs, 3 cats, pony, chickens and budgies. She also enjoys photography, gardening, travel and reading.

Lauri Newland  
Receptionist

Lauri started at QHVH in July 2010 and is our head receptionist.  She moved to Sydney Australia from San Diego California in 2004 and has never looked back.  Lauri has years of experience working at different small animal hospitals including the University of Sydney Veterinary Teaching Hospital  and The Eye Clinic for Animals in the US.

 Lauri loves animals and shares her busy home with her husband and their small zoo of dogs, cats and birds.  She is also a certified Sydney Wildlife Carer and loves helping Australia’s injured and orphaned wildlife.

Jacqui Gabriel  VN
Veterinary Nurse

Jacqui Gabriel is the hospital's Head Nurse. She has just recently returned from maternity leave with the birth of her first child Charlotte in August 2010. Jacqui has been at Quakers Hill Vet since January 2000 and is a fully qualified veterinary nurse with over 10 years experience.

Jacqui has 2 dogs, a cat, a bird and an aquarium of tropical fish. She loves family time, running, swimming and is planning to complete her first full Triathlon at the end of the year.

Jacqui has a keen interest in behavioural medicine, animal welfare and client education. However she loves all aspects of her job, even cleaning up after messy animals.

Sarah Kerr  VN (RCVS)
Veterinary Nurse

Sarah, originally from Scotland, has been a qualified Veterinary Nurse for 8 years. She has been a member of the team for 12 months. Sarah has keen interests in Anaesthesiology and Pain Relief, and has added immeasurably to the monitoring of inpatients and management of daily outpatient schedules. Apart from her love of her domestic pets and two snakes, she loves all things Equestrian. In her spare time, she enjoys running.

Lexie Rhodes  VN
Veterinary Nurse

Lexie started at Quakers Hill Veterinary Hospital in August 2008. She completed her Certificate in Animal Studies in 2008 and her Certificate 4 in Veterinary Nursing in 2009. Although she loves animals, Lexie has decided to explore human nursing & is currently studying a Bachelor of Nursing at the University of Western Sydney.

Veterinary Nurse

Amber has been a qualified Veterinary Nurse since 2005 and has been working at QHVH since February 2007. She has a collection of animals including dogs, fish, birds and a rabbit. She enjoys eating chocolate, wakeboarding, visual arts and natural therapies.

Emma Cosgrove  VN
Veterinary Nurse

Emma has been working at Quakers Hill Veterinary Hospital since October 2007. Emma is a fully qualified Vet Nurse completing Certificate IV in Veterinary Nursing in 2010. She loves animals and finds working with them extremely rewarding. Interests include animals, art, music and nature/outdoor activities.

Emma has two cats Oreo & Lilly whom she hand-raised as 4-5 wk old kittens. She also has a greyhound called Mouse whom she adopted from work.  Belle is very friendly, gentle and gets on with the cats.  Emma is interested in animal welfare and enjoys caring for all animals and hand raising kittens.

Katie Lomas  VN
Veterinary Nurse

Katie joined Quakers Hill Veterinary Hospital in 2005 after a career at the RSPCA and inner city veterinary practices. The births of Colby and Travis has varied Katie's hours and roles. Her family proudly boasts a horse, dog, cat and chickens.

Renee Pogson  
Trainee Nurse

Renee joined QHVH 2 1/2 years ago as a Higher School Certtificate placement. She has completed her Certificate in Animal Studies and is currently studying Veterinary Nursing. Renee previously worked at Kellyville Pets for 2 years. She is a Hills Pet Nutrition Adviser.

Renee enjoys spending time with her dog and two rabbits. Her other interests include music, reading, running and travel.

Christie Campbell  
Trainee Nurse

Christie has been a part of the team at QHVH for 1 year. She is a trained Barista and has a Certificate 2 in Retail. Christie completed her Certificate in Animal Studies and is currently studying Veterinary Nursing. She has 3 dogs and 2 cats, and enjoys travelling.

Rachael Kurtz  
Trainee Nurse

Rachel has been working part time with QHVH for 12 months. She is currently in her 3rd year of her degree in Veterinary Science at the University of Sydney. She has a deep passion for animals and is a trained Barista.
